Scarification is a method in which the skin is damaged to create a scar. People choose to use this for beautification in a variety of patterns. Methods vary a few are: 'Cutting' is done with a scalpel. 'Branding' is done with a shaped piece of heated metal or a hot 'wand' type device. 'Etching' is done with a needle / tattoo machine with no ink. This is a good method if a thinner line is desired but may not create puffy red scars.
